Movie Review: The Heartbreak Kid

I've seen reviews of this movie, referring to it as Ben Stiller's funniest movie yet and other such superlative statements. They're lying. Big time. This movie doesn't come close to being as funny as 'Meet the Fockers'. And as you all know, that one wasn't nearly as funny as 'Meet the Parents'.

Storyline... Eddie (Stiller) is single more than not, and when he isn't single he seems to work extra hard to find something wrong with the woman he's dating. So, Eddie meets Lila (Akerman), falls in love and through a set of plot situations gets married earlier than he ever figured he would. So they head to Cabo for their honeymoon and Eddie finds out Lila isn't who he thought she was. Some things irritate, others just freak him out. After more plot situations Lila becomes sunburned from head to toe and ends up spending several days in their hotel room. While Lila "heals" Eddie meets someone else. Through more storyline, which only seems normal coming from someone like Stiller or Sandler, Eddie ignores all reason and pursues a relationship with this new woman, never telling her about his wife and never telling his wife about this new woman.

The acting was good. Well, everyone's except Stiller's. He was good to a point, then he became completely unbelievable. The only character worse than Stiller's was the part of Martin (the cousin). The main reason this movie falls down was the writing. You get to a certain point in the movie and you're laughing much of the way, then it just becomes tragic. You realize if this really happened you wouldn't feel sorry for him at all. The word moron and imbecile just seem to be parked on your lips through the last half of the movie. I didn't have any "feelings" for Eddie, other than I felt he got was he deserved.

Would I recommend this movie to anyone? No. Should you see this movie? Only if you have some inane need to see every Ben Stiller movie ever made.

My Rating: D
